CLARK

The Jim Clark is the premiere road course at Stamford Raceway and is named for one of motorsports premiere drivers.  The consummate driver and gentlemen of Formula 1, Indycars and Sports Racers in the 1960's, Jim's brilliant career came to a tragic end in a crash during a formula two race in Hockenheim, Germany in 1968.

Reports on front pages around the world following the crash seemed fitting for a sportsman who had raised the reputation of the sport by his demeanor and skill. Time Magazine had thought so a few years before, featuring him on its cover, commissioning an artist's impression of him in his Lotus's cockpit. But it is rare that sport makes the front page instead of the back page and, sadly, it is usually tragedy that triggers it.

Clark, however, was more than just a high profile sports hero. He was one a handful of racing drivers since the birth of the sport who had redefined the degree of excellence required to dominate it, and able to inspire its enthusiasts.
